sodacrystals.jpgIf you live in a big family, or a family with young kids, there's a very good chance you've got the washing machine on several times a week, if not every day.

Ignoring the cost of water and electricity, this will soon add up to quite a bill on washing powder and fabric softener. So why not save yourself a fortune by making your own cheaper washing powder that is more effective and kinder on the environment and your washing machine.

Ingredients:

  • 1kg relatively good washing powder (Persil/Ariel)
  • 1kg cheap washing powder (Supermarket budget range)
  • 1kg soda crystals

Method: Mix all the ingredients into a sealable tub that can hold the 3kg of powder.

Usage: Use as normal, however only use ½ as much as the good washing powder states on the box.

This mix is both cheap and friendlier to the environment, but it'll also be kinder to your washing machine. As the soda crystals soften the water, it'll make the other ingredients way more efficient and at the same time it'll also prevent and reduce the limescale build up in your washing machine.

This mix may not leave your clothes smelling as you wish, so buy a bottle of concentrated fabric softener and add ¼ or the suggested dose to the rinse cycle. The soda crystals will make your clothes soft already, so all the fabric softener will be doing it adding that lovely clean smell.

Of course, if you want to save more pennies, you can make your own fragrance using essential oils.
