Spend to Save Even More Energy

The other day I detailed some simple free energy saving tips. Now I'm going to detail some more ways of saving energy, but this time, these tips need you to part with some money. But don't worry too much, in the long run, these little investments will save you a fortune.

Fix the Windows

I don't for one moment think you are living with broken windows, but from an energy saving point of view, you may just well be if you've not got double glazing. This is probably the single most expensive way of saving energy, but it is also one of the primary routes all your heating will escape.

So save up and take advantage of the recession busting deals out there and get your house or flat double glazed. You'll be amazed at how much warmer the house is and how little heating you really need, especially if you follow some of the simple tips I gave previously.

Seal the Doors

If you go the route of double glazing your home, you may be offered a new set of exterior doors to match. If you like them and can afford them, then go for it. However, if you don't, all is not lost. Head down to the load hardware store and buy some draught excluder seal.

It's a roll of foam material that comes in a small roll with one sticky side and "installs" in minutes.

Whilst you're at it, get a draught excluder for the bottom of the door. You can either get one that fastens onto the door, or get yourself one of those sausage dogs your grand parents probably have.

Insulate the Loft

This is a very affordable and easy option: get some loft insulation, and lots of it. It's not very expensive and very easy to install.

Change the Bulbs

Did you know the incandescent light bulb will be completely banned from Australia by 2010? No? Well now you do, and why not ban them from your house NOW.

The new energy saving lightbulbs are far superior to those first introduced to the market. They come to full power just as quickly as incandescent bulbs, and offer just as much light at a fraction of the cost. They also have a much longer life, so once you've replaced all your bulbs, you're not likely to need to buy another for many years.

Bleed Your Radiators

This one may potentially cost you nothing if you're happy to do this yourself, but if not, your local handyman will probably do it for a couple of pints.

Bleeding your radiators will clear out any air pockets that have built up over the years. This in turn will make them far more efficient at heating your home.

Wrap Up Your Tank

If you have a geyser or hot water tank, ensure it is well insulated. You can do this by buying an insulating cover for your hot water tank/geyser.

Whilst you're up there wrapping it up all nice and cosy, drop the thermostat temperature down: 66oC is plenty hot enough. You probably won't even notice the difference.

That's it for today's energy saving tips. Yes, they cost you money now, but in the long run they'll save you much more than you'll spend. You will also want to contact your energy supplier as they'll be able to help you pay for some of these, depending on your circumstances.

If you've got any tips of your own, be sure to let me know.
